Ms. Ng's Teaching Philosophy

English New Language teacher

I am a native New Yorker who believes every student should have access to quality education. I see all my students as individuals with unique ways of learning. I use multiple teaching methods, to motivate students to engage in the material. I aim to foster a learning environment where students aren't afraid to take risks and learn to build from each other's ideas.

Instructional Practices

Objectives for Newcomers

Objectives are clearly shown in English and the student's home language. Students in my classroom currently speak Spanish, Mandarin, and Bengali.

Differentiated Class Readings for Newcomers

I use visuals such as photographs and videos to support student learning. Readings are chunked into different paragraphs and accompanied by guiding questions. Vocabulary is intentionally underlined based on relevance to the text.

Student Learning

Before

Before

Before

Students in my book club are reading "The Outsiders". We're using the ICEE strategy (Inference, Context, Evidence, and Explanation) to write a strong paragraph that answers the prompt. This student needs to work on explaining how her evidence supports her inference.

After

I work with students in small intentional groupings. After a one-on-one check-in with the student, she was able to use her own words to explain why her evidence supports her inference.
